for Teaching Children
How to Pray
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
— Philippians 4:6 NKJV

Prayer is the most powerful tool we can place in a child's hands. This guide provides parents and educators with intentional, age-appropriate questions to help children discover, understand, and develop a genuine prayer life. These questions are designed to be asked conversationally — at the dinner table, at bedtime, during car rides, and in quiet moments of connection. Use them consistently and watch your child's faith come alive.
Part 1 — Foundations of Prayer (Ages 2–5)
1
Do you know who God is and that He loves you very much?
Parent guide: Establish identity first. A child who knows they are loved by God prays from a place of security, not fear.
2
What is something good that happened today that we can thank God for?
Parent guide: Gratitude is the gateway to prayer. Practice daily thanksgiving to build a lifestyle of praise.
3
If you could ask God for anything right now, what would it be?
Parent guide: This reveals your child's heart and opens dialogue about petition and trust.
4
Do you think God hears you when you talk to Him? Why?
Parent guide: Address doubt early. Build confidence that God is a personal, listening God.
5
Who are some people we should pray for today?
Parent guide: Teaches intercession — praying beyond self. Develops empathy and kingdom mindset.
"Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
— Matthew 19:14 NKJV
Part 2 — Deepening Prayer Life (Ages 5–9)
6
What is the difference between talking to God and talking to a friend?
Parent guide: Helps children understand reverence while maintaining relational intimacy with God.
7
Has God ever answered one of your prayers? What happened?
Parent guide: Testimonies build faith. Help your child identify and celebrate answered prayers.
8
What do you do when you pray for something and it does not happen the way you wanted?
Parent guide: Addresses unanswered prayer — teaches trust in God's sovereignty and timing.
9
Can you pray for someone who has hurt you or been unkind to you?
Parent guide: Introduces the concept of praying for enemies (Matthew 5:44) — radical kingdom behavior.
10
Do you think God wants to hear about small things, like losing a toy or feeling left out?
Parent guide: Removes the idea that only "big" problems deserve prayer. God cares about everything.
11
What is worship? Can prayer be a form of worship?
Parent guide: Expands the concept of prayer beyond asking — into adoration and glorifying God.
12
Can you be angry with God and still pray? What would you say?
Parent guide: Emotional honesty in prayer. Teach children that God can handle their real feelings.
Part 3 — Kingdom Prayer (Ages 9 – After School)
13
What does it mean to pray God's will and not just your own wishes?
Parent guide: Introduces alignment with God's purposes — "Thy will be done" (Matthew 6:10).
14
What is intercession and why does God need humans to pray?
Parent guide: Deep theological question for older children. Explores God's design for partnership with humanity.
15
Have you ever felt God speaking to you during prayer? What did it feel like?
Parent guide: Validates prophetic and intimate encounters with God. Helps children discern God's voice.
16
What would happen in our family, school, and city if every person prayed daily?
Parent guide: Expands vision from personal to corporate and societal impact of prayer.
17
How can you use scripture to guide your prayers?
Parent guide: Teaches praying the Word of God — the most powerful form of prayer.
18
Is there someone in your world — school, community, city — you feel called to pray for consistently?
Parent guide: Develops a personal prayer assignment. Cultivates prophetic intercession in young people.
19
What is spiritual warfare and how does prayer play a role?
Parent guide: Age-appropriate introduction to Ephesians 6 — equipping children as prayer warriors.
20
If you were to teach a younger child how to pray, what would you tell them?
Parent guide: Consolidation and multiplication. A child who can teach prayer has truly internalized it.
21
What is your personal prayer commitment this week — and how will you keep it?
Parent guide: Accountability and discipline. Helps children own their prayer life as a personal covenant.
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
— James 5:16 NKJV
