The Science of Reading
Parent Toolkit

Research-based literacy strategies every parent and educator needs to develop strong, confident readers from birth through after school.

By Dr. Muriel Ph.D. · Co-Founder & Assistant Director · Omega Academy of Excellence

The Science of Reading (SOR) is not a program — it is a body of research spanning over 50 years of cognitive science, linguistics, and education. It tells us definitively how the brain learns to read — and what every parent can do at home to support this process. At Omega Academy of Excellence, we integrate SOR principles into every aspect of our literacy curriculum. This toolkit brings that knowledge directly into your hands.

The 5 Pillars of Reading Science
🔤
1. Phonemic Awareness
The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Foundation of all reading.
📝
2. Phonics
Understanding the relationship between letters and sounds. Decoding written words by applying phonics rules systematically.
3. Fluency
Reading accurately, quickly, and with proper expression. Fluency frees the brain to focus on meaning, not decoding.
📚
4. Vocabulary
The breadth and depth of words a child knows. Rich vocabulary is directly linked to reading comprehension and academic success.
💡
5. Comprehension
Understanding, interpreting, and applying what is read. The ultimate goal of all literacy development.
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."
— Hosea 4:6 NKJV · Knowledge begins with literacy.
Reading Milestones by Age
Birth–12 mo
Responds to voices · Enjoys being read to · Focuses on high-contrast images · Babbles in response to language
1–2 Years
Points to pictures in books · Uses 10–50 words · Begins two-word combinations · Pretends to read books
2–3 Years
Knows the names of familiar books · Fills in words in familiar stories · Recognizes some environmental print (stop signs, logos)
3–4 Years
Knows most alphabet letters · Recognizes rhyming words · Retells stories · Shows interest in writing letters
4–5 Years
Reads own name · Counts syllables · Identifies beginning sounds · Writes letters and simple words · Reads 5–10 sight words
5–6 Years
Decodes simple CVC words · Reads simple sentences · Understands left-to-right, top-to-bottom · 20+ sight words
6–8 Years
Reads chapter books with support · Comprehends fiction and non-fiction · Uses context clues · Reads 90+ words/minute
After School
Reads to learn · Summarizes and makes inferences · Analyzes text structure · Reads independently for sustained periods
Daily Activities by Age Group
0–2 yrs
Talk, Sing, and Narrate Everything
Language exposure is the foundation of literacy. Narrate your daily activities, sing nursery rhymes, and read board books daily. Every word a baby hears is a deposit into their literacy bank.
✦ Goal: 30 minutes of rich language interaction daily
2–3 yrs
Rhyme Play & Sound Games
Play rhyming games — "Cat rhymes with what? Hat! Bat! Mat!" Clap syllables in names and familiar words. Read predictable, rhythmic books. Focus on the joy of sounds before the mechanics of letters.
✦ Goal: Daily rhyme and sound play, 10–15 minutes
3–4 yrs
Letter Recognition & Phonics Introduction
Introduce letters through multisensory activities — tracing in sand, forming with playdough, magnetic letters on the fridge. Connect each letter to its sound and a word your child loves. Begin with letters in their name.
✦ Goal: 3–4 letters per week using sight, sound, and touch
4–5 yrs
Blending Sounds & Sight Words
Practice blending 3-letter words (C-A-T → CAT). Introduce the Dolch sight word list, 5 words per week. Use flashcard games, hopscotch with words, and word hunts around the house to make it active.
✦ Goal: 100 sight words by kindergarten entry
5–7 yrs
Decodable Books & Fluency Practice
Use decodable readers that match your child's phonics level. Practice repeated reading of the same text for fluency. Read aloud together daily — alternate pages, use different voices, make it theatrical and fun.
✦ Goal: 20 minutes of reading practice daily
After School
Read to Learn & Think Critically
Encourage reading across genres — fiction, biography, history, science. Ask comprehension questions: "Why did the character do that? What would you have done? What is the author trying to tell us?" Connect reading to faith and real-world application.
✦ Goal: Independent reading 30 minutes daily + weekly book discussion
⚠️ Signs Your Child May Need Additional Literacy Support
Difficulty rhyming by age 4 · Cannot identify any letters by age 4 · Reverses letters frequently after age 7 · Avoids reading · Reads significantly slower than peers · Cannot retell a simple story. If you observe these signs, please contact Omega Academy of Excellence immediately for a consultation.
